Alone Town
I met an old man who told me that he felt more at home in the graveyard of his home town than walking down Main Street. He knew everyone in the cemetery but the town was full of strangers. This fellow also told me, when I asked him how he was doing, "if I wasn't wearing suspenders, I'd shoot plumb up in the air."
Hal, banjo, vocal; Cathy, drums; Phillip, harmonica
It could just be the new streetlights
They shine so hard and blue
It could be all the traffic now
I just don’t have a clue
The Rigby’s used to live right there
There’s where I broke my foot
And old man Powell chased us home
Right in this neighborhood
Refrain
This is my hometown, It’s now alone town
Alone in the town where I grew up (repeat)
Today I walked down Main Street
Past faces on the walk
But not one person knew my name
As I went down the block
The coffee shop is closed up
It’s now just level ground
The Starbucks is a going in
The pride of this small town
Refrain
And now I’m in the graveyard
Walkin’ down the lane
And every stone that I pass by
They’re all familiar names
I’m glad no one is watching
As I go down the path
Greeting all my old dear friends
Just like they’d never passed
Refrain
